Tuesdays With Shanti's Dad

Sales Advice Column

He’s my go-to guy.
He knows how to sell (without selling).
Now, I share him with you.

Dear Shanti’s Dad,

How long is a prospect a prospect? When do I give up trying to convert him/her into a client?

H.A., Milwaukee, WI

Dear H.A.,

Ah, how long is a piece of string?

Remember you’re not trying to convert him/her. You’re trying to make their life better by providing them with something they need. The exact time when what you offer is right for their needs is impossible to know. Just gently, gently remind them that you’ll be there when that time comes. Send them articles which might interest them. Call occasionally just to say hello.

I once kept in friendly touch with one prospect for years until they called me one day and said, “Guess what? It’s time.” They became one of my best clients.

A master oil painter was once asked how he knew when a work was completed. His answer: “When it’s sold.”

Stick with it, H.A.

Regards,
Shanti’s Dad
