Tuesdays With Shanti's Dad

Sales Advice Column

He’s my go-to guy.
He knows how to sell (without selling).
Now, I share him with you.

Dear Shanti’s Dad – I try to live my life by the Golden Rule. Does this work with sales also?

JD, New Orleans, LA

Dear JD,

I applaud you. Living by the Golden Rule is a good idea no matter what you do. But for sales, I can immodestly tell you that I’ve improved it …for better, quicker results.

As you well know, the Golden Rule is “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Good rule for sure. But Shanti’s Dad’s Platinum Rule works even better. Really.

Here it is: “Do unto others as THEY would have you do unto THEM. In sales, it’s all about them, not you. Do what they need to have done the way they need you to do it. Speak to them in the manner they feel most comfortable, etc. In the future, I’ll show you how to determine, virtually instantaneously, how to relate successfully…to anyone.

Of course, I would never advocate abandoning the Golden Rule, JD. But, the Platinum Rule will actually better help you to be a more successful salesperson. Really.

Sincerely,
Shanti’s Dad

P.S. Shanti and I love New Orleans!!!
